Monday, November 30 th Entry Task From page 498, describe how to measure the wavelength, amplitude, and frequency of a longitudinal wave. Schedule: Wave InteractionsWave Interactions Objective: I can describe the ways that waves behave I can describe the ways that waves behave Homework Complete the output pageComplete the output page Please have on Desk: pencil, textbookpencil, textbook
2
Possible answer Wavelength: the distance between compressionsWavelength: the distance between compressions Amplitude: How compressed the medium getsAmplitude: How compressed the medium gets Frequency: the number of compressions that occur per secondFrequency: the number of compressions that occur per second
3
For your foldable: Describe when the interaction occursDescribe when the interaction occurs Describe what the interaction isDescribe what the interaction is Draw an exampleDraw an example Explain the exampleExplain the example DO NOT copy your textbookDO NOT copy your textbook
4
Wave Behaviors Read pg 504-508 Identify the 5 different wave behaviors and write them on your notes sheet NOTDefine, give examples (draw pictures to help you) and explanations. Do NOT just copy the book!
5
Wave Behaviors Reflection –When a wave hits a medium it can’t go through, it bounces off that medium It is the reason we see ourselves in a mirror, see colors and hear an echo.
6
Wave Behaviors Refraction –When a wave hits a new medium it slows down or speeds up, this causes the wave to bend. It is the reason things look bigger or out of place when you look at them through water.
7
Wave Behaviors Diffraction –When a wave hits a barrier that has an opening, the wave spreads out after it goes through the opening It is the reason you can still hear someone talking in Mr. McWhirter’s classroom, even though there are barriers between us.
8
Wave Behaviors Constructive Interference –When waves meet and the result is a wave with a higher amplitude –It is the reason surround sound works. Sound waves meet and create a fuller, richer sound. –It is also the reason that innertubing behind a boat can be so fun
9
Wave Behaviors Destructive Interference –When waves meet and the result is a wave with a lower amplitude It is the reason a stereo may be loud in one part of the room, but quiet in another part. Sound waves meet and create a quieter sound Noise canceling head phones also work because of this behavior of wave
