Establish a mandatory grade point average (GPA) for extra-curricular participation at Clayton High School.

Overall recommendation is based in education and not eligibility. Goal is to have more students eligible through increased support systems. Early identification of struggling students will be key.

MSHSAA expectations are inconsistent with Clayton academic standards. Interconnecting extra-curricular activities with academic performance will increase student achievement. Community survey indicates support for a minimum GPA.

Any activity currently under the jurisdiction of MSHSAA. In addition, any activity in which a student competes or performs.

Semester Prior to Participation: o The student shall have earned, the preceding semester of attendance, a minimum of 3.0 units of credit. Semester of Participation: o The student shall currently be enrolled in and regularly attending courses that offer 3.0 units of credit.

Students need to pass 3.0 credits under MSHSAA. Six D-’s are acceptable under MSHSAA. Inconsistent standards and expectations send mixed messages Student athletes can suffer loss of NCAA eligibility.

All participants in extra-curricular activities will be held to the MSHSAA standards. All participants in extra-curricular activities must maintain a 2.0 GPA in all classes in which they are enrolled. Academic eligibility will be in effect for one quarter, and will be reconsidered each quarter. The GPA used to determine eligibility for extra- curricular activities will be the GPA of the student from the prior quarter.

PHASE I ◦ 2014-2015 school year: The new GPA standards would be implemented on a pilot basis. PHASE II ◦ 2015-2016 school year: The program would be fully implemented at the beginning of the year. Feedback period will begin May 7, 2014 and ending June 11, 2014. Vote on the final version will take place June of 2014.
