Lighting Instruments What we use to light the stage and how we use it.

Today Objective: Identify the most commonly used lighting instruments and name their parts. Agenda: Journal; Coloring the Plot; Notes; Labeling; Summary and Reflection. Journal: Please explain the purpose of Magic Sheets and how to go about creating them. Please include not only steps for creating one, but also the information included in one.

Plotting Magic Using your handout from last class, please color in each light on the light plot with the color of gel it would have in it. Remember, the code listed above the the light itself indicates the color. Use the Magic Sheet to find out the color each code is referring to. Cyc Lights go: R124, R125, R127 all the way across.

Commonly Used Instruments Scoop Cyc Strip Follow Spot PAR ERS Fresnel Underlined = we use these at AK

Scoops Large fixture Puts out a lot of light over a large space We use them for work (class) light Can take gel

Cyc Strips “Strip Lights” – refers to a single fixture that has more than one lamp. Looks like a rectangular box composed of smaller rectangles in a row. Our strips have three cells. Each cell plugs into it’s own channel so the colors can be isolated. These lights are designed to simply throw light on fabric. They are made to take gel (their primary purpose is for color…)

Follow Spot A light on wheels that a person manually operates. We have 2. They plug into standard electrical outlets, not the light board. Can adjust focus, add color, change beam size.

PAR Parabolic Aluminized Reflector Looks kind of like a wide cylinder. Very basic – think of a car headlight in a metal tube. Throws a lot of really bright light onstage Oval shaped beam Takes gel Primarily used for down, back, or side lighting

ERS Ellipsoidal Reflector Spotlight Most advanced & complex nonautomated light Also most popularly used Change focus from hard to soft Change shape of the beam of light Use gel Use gobos Primarily used for front lighting and to hold gobos

Fresnel Named for the lens, which has ridges going around it (kind of like the rings on a tree), invented by a guy named Fresnel Beam SIZE can be altered, but not it’s SHAPE Takes gel Barn doors can be attached to shape the beam Primarily used for down, back, or side lighting
