3 2. Cattle Kingdom - greater urban populations demanded more food- ranching from TX to KS becomes BIG business -cattle drives to meet railroads up North= Birth of the Cowboy Chisholm Trail Abilene, KS Dodge City

Cattle Kingdom * Chisholm Trail-Abilene KS *(drive cattle up to KS, from TX- ship them on a RR to NY or Chicago -legend of the cowboy Mexican Influences (Spanish Ranchers) -25% AA - *Romanticized as fighting villains - *10-14hr workday - *Young as 15, broken down by 40 - *Long drives: 3mnths *1 cowboy for every 250-300 head of cattle *1 cook *1 wrangler *Very lonely *$5 in TX vs. $40 in Chicago *1500 miles

6 3. Cattle’s Decline - too many cattle= Not worth as much $ -disease -drought *(dry summers & harsh winters wiped out whole herds of cattle) *1886-1887= -50 below 0 -barbed wire fences blocked open range Joseph F. Glidden *No MORE Range wars

7  One of the greatest fears was the **STAMPEDE**, which could result in lost or dead cattle or cowboys. One method of containing a stampede was to get the cattle to run in a circle, where the steer would eventually tire.  Upon reaching Abilene, the cattle were sold. Then it was time to let loose. Abilene had twenty-five saloons open all hours to service incoming riders of the long drive.
