2 Outcomes: 1. Define the concept of interviewing. 2. Identify occupations that rely on interviewing skills. 3. Analyze a videotaped interview to identify good interviewing skills. 4. Summarize the characteristics of good interviewers. 5. Identify 8 forms of non-verbal communication and explain what each one means.

3 Pretend that you are a journalist. You can be a broadcast journalist (radio or TV reporter) or a print media journalist (newspaper or magazine reporter). You have just learned that you have been assigned to interview someone who, coincidentally, you admire.... [Sound familiar? Yes, this is similar to a previous Quick Write] 1) Who are you interviewing? 2) How do you feel about the interview? 3) What sorts of things will you do to prepare for it? This week we are going to see what happened when two journalists did just that—they interviewed their own personal heroes, individuals who they had admired since childhood.

4 Before we go any further, what do we mean by the term “journalistic interview”? Journalistic Interview A conversation designed to gain info on behalf of an unseen audience What occupations use the general skill of interviewing? 75 – 80 percent of all journalists (TV, magazine, newspaper) gain their info from interviews What kind of a person would make a good interviewer? What skills are required to be a good interviewer?

5 Today and Friday we’re going to watch an interview, and as we do, you need to: 1) Try to identify what makes this journalist a good interviewer. 2) Look for something interesting that you never knew until you watched this video.
