If you can’t hear me, please try logging out and back in. This often fixes the problem. If this does not work – please call Tech Support at 1-866-522-7747

Review of Unit 1 It has been a quick first week. I hope that you are all becoming comfortable with the KU platform. Last week you met your classmates and your instructor. You explored the platform and all of the resources, you reviewed the syllabus, and read three Adobe Documents. You shared in a discussion, completed an assignment and a graded review… wow… you did a lot! //What questions do you have about your assignments or the course in general?

Writing Tips— Earning an A+ in Discussions Be sure to address ALL of the questions with details and examples. Access, read and use information from the Unit readings along with your personal comments. After you post, return to address the questions that I ask you. Respond to 2 or more classmates throughout the week. A good rule of thumb is to add some details and examples to your posts. (4-5 sentences) Read the feedback I post in the Gradebook every week. This will help you know that you did well and what you might focus on in coming discussions.

Unit 1 Discussion Board (Be sure to integrate course readings in your post!) The personal experience I have in the field is me having my 16 month old daughter, I love teaching her new things and I love watching her learning how to do the things I teach her. As for professional experiences I don't have any at this time. I am not currently working in the field right now. I would have to say that having my daughter and watching her grow to her age now is what led me to want a profession in this degree. The type of career I think that I see myself doing is most likely maybe starting out working at a daycare, and then I would love to teach kids at a school or a pre-k class. Here are a few ideas in the Reading section of Unit 1 (“Who Are These People?” ) that were new to me: 1. Heredity & environmental influences also work together during development. They can be positive or sources of risk especially for infants, toddlers, & preschoolers who have disabilities or who are exposed to poverty, violence, or environmental harms. 2. Providing lots of verbal stimulation, such as reading books, singing songs, telling stories, reciting nursery rhymes & routinely talking with children help them advance in their cognitive & language development. I found this one interesting because I do almost all of these with my daughter except reading books, telling stories, and the nursery rhymes. She just never seems to be interested in books or anything like that. But she loves it when I sing to her and we talk back and forth all the time. I would like to start doing these other things with her though, so do you have any advice for me to get her more interested in these other things? 3. A provider with good communication skills can build trust and confidence in parents, especially those who are still getting used to the idea of leaving their child with others. I liked this one because I am one of those parents who don't want their child out of their sight. (National Academies, 2003) This is a GREAT example of a DB post!

When can you expect your grades? Instructors write detailed feedback to you that you will find in the gradebook. When you check your numeric grades, click on top of your grades to see these comments. Grades must be posted by Sunday night following the end of the unit.

Seminar Agenda In this seminar, we will review our readings for the week and we will discuss the jobs available in the field of early childhood development. We will go on a field trip to find out about current jobs and their requirements. We will also discuss learning styles and how they impact your career.

Unit 2: Professional Roles and Populations The field of early childhood development consists of countless services, which include: programs for infants and toddlers, preschool programs, family childcare, childcare centers, kindergarten, and schooling for primary age children Each has the potential to foster healthy development and learning as well as positively impact children's lives; however, each of these require professionals to have similar characteristics as they partake in the role of working with children and their families. //What qualities should all of us in the field possess?

Early childhood professionals have many career opportunities and different types of settings in which they may chose to work. Child care centers are facilities where care typically is provided to children in a nonresidential building with different age-group classrooms. Care is provided for less than 24 hours per day. State child care licensing regulations include definitions of the types of child care centers that must meet licensing requirements. These definitions often include a minimum number of children and/or a minimum number of hours the facility operates to determine whether it must be licensed. Center-based childcare centers may be organized in a number of ways, depending on the sponsorship or ownership. //What are some specific types of child care centers? Careers in the Field of Early Childhood Development

 Non-Profit Childcare Centers YMCA or YWCA sponsored  Faith-Based Childcare Centers non-profit and are sponsored by a church  For-Profit (Proprietary) Childcare Centers are typically owner operated, and the goal of these centers is to provide a service for fees and realize a financial profit.  Chain or Franchise Childcare Centers are individually or corporately owned and governed by a corporation that sets policy.  Employer-Sponsored Childcare Centers provide on-site childcare facility for employees  There are also Cooperative Childcare Centers, run by families of children that attend, and Specialty programs, which focus on dance, gymnastics, sports, or a specific teaching philosophy. Types of Childcare Centers

//What are some possible job roles in the field of early childhood development?

Jobs or Roles in a Child Care Center A childcare owner, director or administrator of an early childhood program oversees all aspects or the program including overseeing staff, curriculum, and facilities. The director is responsible for compliance with state and local regulations and program policies. The head teacher of a childcare center is responsible for day-to-day operation of the classroom including the physical environment, curriculum planning and implementation The teacher assistant or aide working in a childcare program assists in the classroom under the direction of the head teacher. He or she may be assigned to work as a one-on-one aide to a child with special needs and may be responsible for prepping materials, making lunches, feeding, toileting, and supervising children.

Other Roles and Responsibilities 1. Home-based careers—family childcare 2. Community-based Careers Child social worker-- Most social workers have a minimum of a bachelor's degree, and many in this field have master's degrees in social work with an undergraduate degree in child development. Children's librarians have the responsibility of selecting materials for the library's children's department, but they also do much more. They are responsible for planning a variety of programs and activities for young library patrons as well. They must conduct outreach, promote upcoming Child life specialists are trained professionals with expertise in helping children and their families overcome life’s most challenging events. Individuals working in this career have a strong background in child development and family systems. Child life specialists promote effective coping through play, education, and self-expression activities.

Roles in Public and Private Schools Note: Public school teachers must be licensed, which typically requires a bachelor's degree AND the completion of an approved teacher education program in the state where you reside. Teachers must have the ability to communicate, inspire trust and confidence, and motivate students, as well as understand students' educational and emotional needs. Kindergarten children learn by play and hands-on activities, and academics begin to take place during this year. Letter recognition, phonics, numbers, and awareness of nature and science, which were introduced in preschool, are now being investigated further.
