6 WHAT IS COPYRIGHT? Copyright protects original works of authorship-whether published or unpublished. Copyright grants the author of the work the legal right to determine how or whether the work will be reproduced, distributed, displayed or performed.

7 Why do teachers need to know about copyright? Must educate users to respect copyright and use responsibly Must use it responsibly in their classroom.

8 WHAT IS FAIR USE the fair use of a copyrighted work, including such use by reproduction in copies…for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching(including multiple copies for classroom use), scholarships or research is not an infringement of copyright

10 Fair Use Factors What is the purpose of the use? What is the nature of the work to be used? How much of the work will you use? What effect would this use have on the market for the original or for permissions if the use were widespread?
