Health and Wellness Your body and mind are in tune with each other Health- is the condition of your body and your mind Physical Health- the condition of your body Mental and Emotional Health- your thinking, attitudes, and feelings Social Health- your relationship with others

Physical, Mental, Emotional, & Social Health All are affected by your day-to-day actions and decisions Wellness- a way of living based on healthy attitudes and actions If you take care of your body and keep a positive attitude, you are more likely to enjoy, good health

Physical Health Everyday activities Sleeping, grooming, eating, and exercise all contribute to your physical health You have energy for all the things you need and want to do every day.

Physical Health Get medical checkups regularly Doctors have issued warnings about decibel damage. Decibel- measures the loudness of sound Any noise above 85 decibels can damage your hearing When sound levels are too high, the sound can destroy hearing receptors (hair cells) and cause hearing loss.

Sleep and Rest While you sleep, your body repairs itself, removes waste products from cells, and builds a supply of energy for action the next day When you don’t get enough sleep, everything feels like an effort Teens need to aim for about 8 hours of sleep a night

Exercise and Nutrition It has been proven that people who are more physically active and maintain a healthy weight over a life span have fewer health problems,more energy,and a better mental outlook

Exercise and Nutrition Your body needs nutritious food in order to function efficiently Eating a variety of foods keeps you well- nourished and gives you the energy you need to keep on top of your schedule

Nutrition When growing up and going through the normal life cycle- 1. Childhood 2. Adolescence 3. Adulthood 4. Old age-- dietary needs CHANGE Establishing good food habits early can aid in development and minimize illness Infancy and teenage you have an increased need for most nutrients Adults and older people need to decrease calories, still need nutrients

Good Grooming Grooming- the personal care routine you follow to keep yourself clean and attractive Cleanliness is vital for your health and appearance

Caring for your Skin Your skin is like fabric that covers and protects your body In warns you about heat, cold,and pain. It produces oils to keep itself soft and moisture to help regulate your body temperature

Skin Your body contains a lot of sweat glands under your arms,when you perspire, skin bacteria react with the perspiration and produce an odor Use deodorant or antiperspirant every day Antiperspirants also help tokeep your skin drier

Acne Acne is a skin problem that develops when glands below the pores (tiny openings) in the skin become blocked The oils normally move through the pores to soften the skin are trapped beneath it As more oil becomes trapped, black heads and white heads develop

Acne Often areas become irritated or infected and develop into pimples Despite what you might think, no medical evidence links your diet-chocolate,cola, or potatoes chips to the cause of acne About 80% of teens have acne Acne is most common on the face, upper chest, and back Best treatment- wash face 2 times a day or use medication

Acne The worst thing you can do is pick or squeeze the acne This injures the skin, spread bacteria, and can leave lifelong scars Serious cases need to be treated by a dermatologist- a doctor specializing in skin problems

Hair Care Did you know that hair reflects your general health? Attractive hair begins on the inside, poor diet,emotional stress, or even a bad cold can alter the appearance of your hair. You should shampoo every day Dandruff or scales and flakes on the scalp, Change your pillowcases often

Teeth Brushing your teeth after eating and before going to bed helps remove decay causing plaque Plaque- a sticky film that clings to your teeth, is formed by the food, bacteria, and air in your mouth. Together, plaque and sugar combine to form acid

Teeth Brush your teeth after eating Floss regularly between teeth Eat starchy and sugary foods at mealtime rather than snacktime See dentist regularly

Stress Stress is the physical or emotional strain or tension that is the body’s natural response to conflict Everyone has to deal with stress Stress isn’t all negative The stress you feel compels you to work harder to succeed

Stress On the other hand, too much stress can cause emotional strain and even lead to physical health problems Signs Your body gives you physical and emotional signals- nerves, headaches, tightness in shoulders or neck, or overly tired

Signs of Stress Signs of stress are like warning signals. When you see signs of stress in yourself, try to find healthy ways to reduce it

What can you do? Think about the positive side of a situation Choose the problems you decideto meet head on Learn to be more accepting Be open to other points of view Try to relax or work off your stress with physical activity

Review Identify the 3 main components of health Why is sleep important to your health? How do you benefit from exercise and good nutrition? What causes acne? Identify steps you can take to help prevent tooth decay Describe how stress can be both harmful and helpful How can you handle stress?
