The Napoleonic Wars Think back to last year. What do you remember about the war between Napoleonic France and the rest of Europe? This war causes American economy to boom. Why? France conquers most of Europe, but not England. Why? Economic Warfare (England vs. France) France prevented England from trading with mainland Europe. Why did France do this? In response, England blockades Europe and prohibits neutral countries (e.g., U.S.) from carrying shipments of goods FROM French colonies. Why was England able to do this?

Impressment Impressment: forcible draft or taking of goods British law permitted it during times of war Royal Navy stopped neutral ships and IMPRESS any British subject on board British start doing this to American sailors! Why? How do you think the British justified these acts? 2,500 American sailors impressed Chesapeake incident (3 U.S. sailors killed in U.S. waters) How was American trade hurt? What else was hurt? Jefferson’s Response Jefferson felt country was not ready for war Jefferson convinces Congress to halt all British imports (nonimportation acts) Then, he pushes Congress to pass the Embargo Act of 1807 PROHIBITED U.S. FROM EXPORTING GOODS! Why do you think Jefferson pushed for the Act? What effect did the Act have on the U.S. economy?

Effects of Jefferson’s Policies Most Americans hated the Embargo Act See political cartoon on next slide. Meaning? How were Federalists, especially in New England, hurt by the Embargo Act of 1807? Why? How did Federalists benefit? Why? Economic Disaster: unemployment, no import duty revenue, and crops went unsold Jefferson abolished the Act during his last week in office, but his presidency ended on a sour note Learning Goal Connection: How do you think the Embargo Act affected Jefferson’s legacy as president?
