5 What is CRT? Culturally Responsive Training (CRT) cultivates cultural awareness to more positively address the diverse needs of our student populations through exploring assumptions, perceptions and stereotypes and emphasizing the value of social capital.

6 LAHC Equity Plan: Goals have been set for the following LAHC student groups: 5 Access: Whites, Asian/ Pacific Islanders, Foster Youth Course Completion: African Americans, Hispanic males, Foster Youth ESL/Basic Skills Completion: African Americans, Hispanic males, DSPS, Females Degree and Certificate Completion: African American, American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander Transfer: Hispanic, DSPS, Economically Disadvantaged

7 LAHC Equity Plan: Goals & Outcomes 6 Based on overall 6% improvement in disproportionate ratios, completion rate percentages, and transfer rates Increased faculty/staff participation Sources used were from various sources including LACCD Student Information System Resources budgeted: grants, Student Equity funds, Student Success and Support Program funds, ESL/Basic Skills Initiative funds, and District funds

9 CRT Background 8 LAHC Joined Achieving the Dream in 2011 Nationwide initiative seeking barriers to student achievement. Cultural Equity Committee formed in 2012 as one of three AtD interventions LAHC became an AtD leader college in 2014. Learning Works Grant in 2012-13 “Train the Trainers” with Dr. David Truscello and Dr. Larry Coleman from CCBC 7 employees from LAHC campus

10 CRT Background Cont. Created One Day Workshop that focused on Race, Culture, and Social Capital Emphasis on diverse student populations of our college Promoted dialogue & change amongst faculty, classified, and administration 9

11 CRT 2015 July 2015- We received additional training from our Baltimore trainers, Dr. David Truscello and Dr. Larry Coleman. The emphasis included race, culture, stereotype threat, and grit. LAHC is creating shorter workshops to address certain student populations.

12 Current CRT Projects Present Between Fall 2014 and Spring 2015: Presented seven workshops and two wrap up sessions on campus Developed over 100 CRT strategies for implementation on campus Website developed and constantly updated CRT in the Library Resource Center 11

Six (now seven!) off campus events, conferences and panel presentations Opening day and Flex day presentations in August 2015 Planning future workshops on campus now ! “Be the Face of Change” Focus on Social Capital, Race, Culture, Stereotype Threats and Perceptions, and Developing Grit 12

23 32.5% of LAHC’s 10,000 students live at or below the poverty line Community college students often have very few ties to people familiar with the social capital of beyond high school. 22 All capital begins with social capital, the networks of people who care for us.
