AN ATOM OF CARBON… Has an atomic number of 6. This means it has 6 protons. If the atom is neutral, this also means it has 6 electrons.

IONS An atom or group of atoms that has become electrically charged. Gain an electron? You’re negatively charged Lose an electron? You’re positively charged

ISOTOPES When an atom is missing or has an extra neutron. Carbon is normally C-12, but can be C-14, C-16, etc.
