Subject Area: Earthquake Discoveries Near and Far EQ: Is there seismic activity on other cosmic bodies? Questions: 1.How does seismic studies reveal the Earth’s interior? 2.What are some seismic discoveries on other cosmic bodies?

Earthquake Discoveries Near and Far The study of earthquakes has lead to many important discoveries about the Earth’s interior. Scientists learn about the Earth’s interior by observing how seismic waves travel through the Earth. They also learn about other cosmic bodies interiors by studying the seismic waves activity of these bodies.

Discoveries in Earth’s Interior If you poke a pencil into water it looks like the pencil is bent. Light waves bounce off the pencil in the water making it look bent, because the light waves actually bend. This is the same way seismic waves travel through rock.

The Moho The Moho was discovered in 1909, it is a place within the Earth where the speed of seismic waves increase sharply. The Moho marks the boundary between the Earth’s crust and mantle. Partner Share: What observation of seismic-wave travel led to the discovery of the Moho? The Moho was discovered because …

Shadow Zone The shadow zone was discovered in 1906. It is an area on the Earth’s surface where no direct seismic waves from a particular earthquake can be detected. The shadow zone suggested that the Earth has a liquid core.

Inner Core The solid inner core was discovered in 1936. Before this discovery seismologists thought that the Earth’s entire core was liquid.

Quakes and Shakes on Other Cosmic Bodies Scientists have taken information they have learned from the Earth and applied it to other cosmic bodies. They have studied other bodies like the moon, Mars, and the Sun.

The Moon In July 1969, humans set foot on the moon for the first time. They brought with them a seismograph. They purposely crashed their landing vehicle back on to the moon to create an artificial seismic wave. If the craft had crashed on the Earth it would have vibrated for 20 to 30 seconds. The surface of the moon vibrated for more than an hour and a half! There is no seismic activity on the Moon. Partner Share: What was discovered about the Moon? On the Moon it was discovered that …

Mars A space probe was sent to Mars in 1976 called Viking I. A seismograph was placed on the roof and the wind on Mars made it hard to read due to the movement. It did record seismic activity after they compensated for the wind. They found that seismic activity existed on Mars. Partner Share: What was discovered about Mars? On Mars it was discovered that …

The Sun Scientists have studied seismic waves using a satellite called SOHO. The Sun is very seismically active. They found that solar flares produce seismic waves. The ones they have detected have been estimated a magnitude of 11.3. >>> Partner Share: What was discovered about the Sun? On the Sun it was discovered that …
