Earthquakes occur due to the collision, separation or sliding motion of plate boundaries. The point of collision is called the focus point. Seismic or shock waves radiate out from this point, they travel to the surface where they release their energy at the epicentre.

Earthquakes A seismograph is an instrument that records incoming tremors/ shock waves. A seismologist is a person who monitors earthquake activity. A Richter Scale is used to demonstrate (show) how strong a quake was on a scale of one to ten.
