3 Key features of the district Extent: about 11427.85 km² ( 1,14mil ha) plus the District Management area (being Kruger National Park, north of Lepelle river). Overall population number is 1 223 747. It is part of the Great Limpopo Transfrontier park, the park that combines South Africa, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

4 Geographical location of MOPANI district municipality Located in Limpopo province, within north- eastern quadrant of the province. Bordered in the east by Mozambique, In the north by Zimbabwe and Vhembe District municipality, In the south, by Mpumalanga province through Ehlanzeni District municipality, In the west by Capricorn and Vhembe DM And in the south-west, by Greater Sekhukhune District municipality.

5 Key features of the district Island with natural wilderness; Home to the ‘Big Five’; Food basket of the country; Baobab tree confirmed to be the biggest in the world with the height of 24 metres and the circumference of 39 metres; Home to the ‘Rain Queen’; The District has been named Mopani because of the abundance of the nutritional mopani worms.

6 Mopani District Context The district consists of five local municipalities. Ba-Phalaborwa Municipality Greater Giyani Municipality Greater Letaba Municipality Greater Tzaneen Municipality; Maruleng Municipality and; The District Management Area.

WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN THE WSDP WSDP pages 138 to 149 caters for water quality information. Main focus is on the water plants. Retail distribution networks and end user points not regularly sampled.

8 WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT IN THE WSDP CONT….. Some bulk water distribution networks are regularly sampled. VIP’s mainly in rural areas as a basic service. Water borne system s mainly in urban areas. Two well equipped laboratories.

11 CHALLANGES Insufficient surface water. VIP’s posing threats on ground water protocol. Inadequate personnel to monitor water quality.

12 RELATIONSHIP OF VARIOUS ROLE PLAYERS DWAF provides regulatory support. Province coordinates compliance by WSA. DEAT monitors environmental related matters and implement law enforcement. WSA’s monitors water quality and implement by law enforcement.

13 AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS The water demand management strategy include awareness campaigns on: Health and hygiene Water pollution Safe use of water. There is a joint implementation by DWAF, the municipality and the Lepelle northern water board.

14 MONTHLY REPORTS TO DWAF Not yet complied. We are currently being assisted to be able to respond on the format.

18 ROLE AND SUPPORT BY OTHER ROLE PLAYERS National DWAF-Develop policies, water quality regulations and standards. Regional DWAF-coordinate provincial support to WSA’s and funding. DPLG-provide policies and guidelines. LNW Board- share the implementation with MDM.
