Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Isometric and Oblique Pictorial Sketching Pictured below are two cubes. The first cube is drawn as an isometric pictorial and the second cube is drawn as an oblique pictorial. Isometric Cube Oblique Cube

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Isometric Pictorials Isometric pictorials show all side equally. Isometric axis

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Using the crating technique By using the crating technique you are able to keep your sketches proportionally correct.

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Crating Technique Step One Begin by sketching a rectangular cube proportioned the same as the object you are sketching. Hint: Use light developmental lines to sketch the crate. Start with the Isometric Axis

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Crating Technique Step Two Study the object and divide the crate into proportionally correct segments. Hint: Do not darken object lines too early. Note: These lines are darker only for illustration purposes all lines should be light developmental lines at this point.

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Crating Technique Step Three Divide the larger segments into smaller segments. Keep lines parallel. Note: These lines are darker only for illustration purposes all lines should be light developmental lines at this point.

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Continue to divide the cube Layout the round parts. Do not darken anything until you are sure that it is correct. Note: These lines are darker only for illustration purposes all lines should be light developmental lines at this point.

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Darken lines that are correct Carefully darken the object lines. If the developmental lines were drawn lightly, then there is no reason to erase them. The developmental lines will fall into the background.

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. First step when sketching Isometric Begin by sketching an isometric axis

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Add the sides of the cube. Keep lines parallel. Second step when sketching Isometric

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Use a rectangular cube for rectangular parts

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Oblique Pictorials Oblique pictorials show one side true shape and project back at 45 degrees on the other two sides

Vex 1.0 © 2005 Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Inc. Additional sketching exercises Pick from the following sketching exercises and work on your pictorial sketching technique: The Plus Gusset Fasteners The Gusset The Bearing Block The Pivot
