Johnson Space Center Identify the major components and functions of the Pulmonary Function System (PFS): Pulmonary Function Module/Photoacoustic Analyzer Module (PFM/PAM) Gas Delivery System (GDS) Rebreathing Hardware and Mixing Bag System (MBS) Provide hands-on exposure to the basic hardware configurations. Provide hands-on exposure to the PFS software. Lesson Objectives

3 3 Hardware Overview & Task Training 2013Martin Bost / Erik Hougland Pulmonary Function System Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center The PFS is a NASA/ESA collaborative development in the field of respiratory physiology instrumentation. Two primary components: HRF PFM/PAM & HRF GDS Capable of wide range gas analysis using rebreathing protocols and gas mixing. Current Activities Overview Maintenance: –Hardware Calibration –Syringe Maintenance –Relief Valve Checkout –Tank gauge photos Experiments: –BP Regulation (rebreathing) –Energy (MBS)

4 4 Hardware Overview & Task Training 2013Martin Bost / Erik Hougland Pulmonary Function System Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center Training vs. Flight Hardware The flight hardware has a camera shoe attachment for mounting to the seat track using a flexible bracket. –Respiratory Valve Unit –Mixing Bag System Main Body –The pole used in training is for 1-g mounting only. All on-orbit cables and connectors will have caps. All cables are properly labeled on orbit

5 5 Hardware Overview & Task Training 2013Martin Bost / Erik Hougland Pulmonary Function System Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center Pulmonary Function Module (PFM) –Gas Management System –Data Management Unit –Electronics –Requires external PC to operate Photoacoustic Analyzer Module (PAM) –Two miniaturized Photoacoustic Gas Analyzer(s) (PGA) –One laser-based Oxigraf ® oxygen analyzer –Analyzers require 15 – 45 minutes to warm up HRF PFM/PAM

Johnson Space Center GDS Tank Contents Tank 1 15% Oxygen (O 2 ) 85% Nitrogen (N 2 ) Tank 2 10% Carbon Dioxide (CO 2 ) 1% Argon (Ar) 89% Oxygen (O 2 ) Tank 3 Spare tank Contents may vary Tanks 4 & 5 71.2% Nitrogen (N 2 ) 0.3% Carbon Monoxide (CO) 0.5% Acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) 1.0% Sulfur Hexafloride (SF 6 ) 1.0% Freon (R-22) 1.0% Methane (CH 4 ) 25% Oxygen (O 2 )

10 10 Hardware Overview & Task Training 2013Martin Bost / Erik Hougland Pulmonary Function System Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center Unique Characteristics –4L Rebreathing Bag is filled with a gas mixture from the GDS –Subjects breathe in and out of the rebreathing bag –Gas composition in the bag changes over time –O 2 decreased while CO 2 increases –Blood-soluble gases will decrease while insoluble gases will not –Used to assess various parameters of pulmonary, as well as cardiac, function (e.g., lung volume, cardiac output, etc.). Basic Session Flow –Hardware assembly –PFM/PAM power on and warm-up –Calibration and experiment protocol –Hardware disassembly and cleaning Rebreathing Hardware Overview

16 16 Hardware Overview & Task Training 2013Martin Bost / Erik Hougland Pulmonary Function System Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center Unique Characteristics –Subjects breathe in cabin air and exhale into a large (15 L) bag –The composition of inhaled gas (fairly constant) is measured and compared to that of the exhaled gas (which is mixed over time, not breath-by-breath) –Used for measuring aerobic capacity and oxygen uptake Basic Session Flow –Hardware assembly –PFM/PAM power on and warm-up –Calibration and experiment protocol –Hardware disassembly and cleaning –Expiration Hose set aside to dry and stowed at end of crew day Mixing Bag System (MBS) Overview

25 25 Hardware Overview & Task Training 2013Martin Bost / Erik Hougland Pulmonary Function System Lyndon B. Johnson Space Center PFS Software Protocols for breathing tests and calibrations are prompted by the PFS software. –PODF or SODF procedures will include steps to set-up hardware. –P/SODF procedures will instruct the crewmember to follow the on- screen instructions for calibrations and experiment protocols. –On-screen instructions may point back to P/SODF for additional information or hardware setup. On-screen instructions coordinate subject and hardware actions. –Timed breathing –Variations in controlled breathing
