Species Richness Number of different species in a study area. Higher number of species the richer and healthier the ecosystem. Doesn’t account for numbers of organisms, some may be rare and some may be common in the area.

Relative Abundance The number of organisms of a particular species as a percentage of the total number of all organisms in a given area or community. Could be the percentage of the total number of robins out of all the birds in a community or out of all the vertebrates etc.

Habitat An ecological or environmental area that is inhabited by a particular plant, species, or other type of organism. The natural environment in which an organism lives.

Ecological Niche The sum total of a species’ use of the biotic and abiotic resources in its environment Habitat ≈ address Niche ≈ job
