DO NOW Why do you think we started teaching ethical decision making in unit 1? What area of your life might present you with an ethical dilemma within 3 months? Why should all codes of ethics be written in the positive?

Standard Describe the ethical and legal responsibilities of businesses in this cluster and explain their implications for guest/customer and employee conduct.

Goals Define ethics and business ethics Identify steps using the ethical decision making model. Illustrate a code of ethics. Solve ethical dilemmas and create positive decisions

Definitions/Ethics v. Morals Ethics- the rules of conduct recognized in respect to a particular class of human actions or a particular group, culture, etc. which are based in legality: medical ethics; employee ethics. Morals-founded on the fundamental principles of right conduct rather than on legalities, enactment, or custom: moral obligations.

Continued Code of ethics- a set of guidelines which are designed to set out acceptable behaviors for members of a particular group, association, or profession. (Written in the positive) – Example: Please refrain, Employees shall, All employees must…, Employees will serve all customers promptly etc.

Continued Social responsibility- A company has responsibility to refrain from acting (resistance stance) or it can be "positive," meaning there is a responsibility to act (proactive stance). Support ball teams(uniforms) or the community (Build a park, a.k.a. community service).
