Cexpansion of settlers into the Ohio Valley. Drulings made by John Marshall on the Supreme Court. 2. The Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions were in response to the AXYZ Affair. BAlien and Sedition Acts. Ccreation of the District of Columbia. Dappointment of “midnight judges.”

3 Adams lasting Impact Adams presidency was filled with turmoil however he had a lasting impact in the courts He appointed John Marshall as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Marshall had very Federalist leanings (had loose interpretation of Constitution) Wanted to strengthen national government

4 Marshall’s Federalist Court Marbury v. Madison: sets up the Supreme Court with power of Judicial review (power to rule laws and actions of other branches unconstitutional) McCulloch v. Maryland: decided that states could not sue the national government- established national supremacy (power) Gibbons v. Ogden: decided that the national government gets to decide conflicts between the states

5 Evolving Power *Marshall and his court dramatically strengthened the power of the national government through these three cases*
