GIG 11-4-15 Open up your textbook to page 13. Read about Earth’s crust and complete the section below with the graph and blanks regarding Oceanic and Continental Crust.
2
Earth’s Interior Foldable Use the MIMIO to display
3
Earth’s interior is made up of three main layers – Crust – Mantle – Core The deeper down inside Earth, the greater the pressure. The temperature inside Earth increases as depth increases. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0mWQs1_L3fA
4
The Crust The crust is a layer of solid rock that includes both dry land and the ocean floor. 5-80 km thick – The thickest under high mountains and the thinnest under the ocean. Crust under the ocean is called the oceanic crust. Continental crust is the crust that forms the continents is made up of many rocks.
5
The Mantle Below the crust is the mantle 3,000 km thick Made up of rock that is very hot, but solid Three layers – Lithosphere Upper Mantle – Asthenosphere Middle Mantle – Mesosphere Lower Mantle Transitions to the core
6
GIG 11-5-15 Open up your textbook to page 14. Read about the mantle and complete figure 4.
7
Lithosphere Uppermost part of the mantle – Brittle rock, strong, hard, and rigid Similar properties of the crust, so the crust and the uppermost mantle is grouped into the lithosphere. 100 km thick
8
Asthenosphere Under the lithosphere The material is hotter and under increasing pressure. Can bend like a metal spoon but is still solid
9
Mesosphere Below the asthenosphere Includes an area called the transition zone
10
The Core Below the mantle Made up of iron and nickel Made up of two parts – Outer core – molten liquid – Inner core – dense ball of solid iron and nickel metals.
11
Earth’s Magnetic Field The movements of the liquid in the outer core creates Earth’s magnetic field Acts like a bar magnet with polar regions. The compass needle aligns with the lines of force in Earth’s magnetic field. The needle points to Earth’s magnetic north pole. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieW7Hzrr8pw#t= 257 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ou1BiorYRNU compassMagnetic pole reversal
