Step 1. September- November Where do I want to apply? Things to Consider: School Size Class Size Academics Housing Location Costs Campus Life Athletics

Step 2. September- November Visit School Campus Visit Residence Halls Classrooms The academic building within your major Library University Center or Student Union Activities Center Other hot spots on campus Other hot spots off campus You don’t know a school until you’ve been there

Step 3. September-December Fill out the application Create a profile Select application type Select Universities Complete remainder application Pay application fee Fill out the online application at www.applytexas.org

Step 4. September-December Write and Submit College Essay Things to consider: Which topic does the school require? A, B, or C? Does the school require an essay?

Step 5. September-December Turn in transcripts Don’t forget to submit post-graduation transcripts in June.

Step 6. September- December Take SAT/ACT Study 6 weeks in advance Send scores to schools Register for the SAT at www.collegeboard.orgwww.collegeboard.org Register for the ACT at www.ACTstudents.orgwww.ACTstudents.org

Step 7. January-March Apply for Scholarships/Financial Aid Does the University require a separate application or essay for Scholarships? Complete the FAFSA for financial aid. Grants vs. Loans Grant- non-repayable funds given by the government to students to spend on tuition, housing books, etc Loan- funds given to students to spend on tuition, housing books, etc. that MUST be repaid. Register for financial aid at www.fafsa.ed.govwww.fafsa.ed.gov

Step 8. Immediately after being admitted – Some schools let you apply before being admitted. Residence Halls Apartments Apply for housing

Step 9. May Register for Orientation Typically at Freshmen Orientation you will meet your advisor and register for classes.

Step 10. May – August Meet your Advisor You should discuss what you plan to do after you graduate with your advisor so you are sure you are in the correct major. Discuss your degree plan for your advisor and what would be the best way going through the courses and getting your degree.

Step 11. After Orientation and meeting with an Advisor Enroll in classes Things to consider: Degree Plan- is the course you are registering for required? Or is it an elective? Are there any prerequisites for your courses? Course Time- will you be able to wake up for an 8AM class? Do you really want to take night classes if you plan to be involved on campus? Professor- Find out which professors are good and which are bad, use resources like Myedu.com or RateMyProfessors.comMyedu.comRateMyProfessors.com

Step 12. Everyday GO TO CLASS You will NOT be a successful college student if you do not attend class.
