ART 8: Still Life ‘It’s Personal’

What is a Still Life? Still life is defined as a collection of inanimate objects arranged together in a specific way.

The Magic of a Still Life… The magic of still life paintings is that they can show us a new way of looking at the ordinary objects around us. Once they are placed into a specific arrangement and then captured in paint, ink, pastel, or any other medium - the objects take on a whole new meaning. They are imbedded with a life beyond the ordinary. Their existence becomes recorded in time.

What does it Mean?? When looking at a still life painting, or when creating one, the most important thing to ask yourself is, "What does it mean?" Is it a random collection of items, or did the artist have a particular intention when choosing them? It's easy to look at a painting and think, "Hmm, pretty objects", and quickly move on to the next painting. But the artwork usually goes much deeper than just depicting pretty objects. Even if a piece is purportedly meaningless, there is always an underlying thought process behind the work. (And if you want to look at art intelligently, it's important to examine the artwork with an investigative eye and an inquisitive mind!)

Tell me more… The themes for a still life painting can be personal, cultural, societal, mythological, religious or philosophical and existential. Or, they can be based on material qualities, such as color or texture. They can even be whimsically based on objects that start with the same letter of the alphabet, or things you might find in a typical junk drawer in someone's kitchen. And of course, all of these themes can overlap to weave a richly layered tapestry of theme and meaning within a single artwork!

What might this one mean?

Hans Holbein, ‘The Ambassadors’,(1553) Unique as it’s a portrait and a Still Life in one What can you see in the painting? What might these objects symbolize?

And this one by Audrey Flack? “Wheel of Fortune” (1977-78)

Your Task: Create a 2D Still Life composition that is personally meaningful to you Questions to Consider: 1) How will you make it meaninful? 2) What objects will you bring in to depict in your composition? 3) What materials will you use? 4) What techniques will you use to achieve your desired composition?

Here are some examples… ***REMEMBER that making original and authentic art doesn’t mean you have to come up with the idea all by yourself Where might you get inspiration?

Project Steps: 1)Create a Pinterest Board to collect inspiration for this Project (at least 20 pins and at least 5 must come from outside Pinterest) This might include images of other artist’s work Work that includes similar subject matter Work using materials you are interested in Technique tutorials and instructional videos Anything and everything that might inspire you for this particular project

2) ‘Play Day’- Experiment with various mediums, creating marks and three dimensional shapes in order to determine which material(s) you’d like to use for this piece 3) Bring in your ‘Still Life’ objects -as this is a observational drawing exercise, objects should be in front of you 4) Use a viewfinder to decide how you might zoom or crop your image to create the most interesting composition 5) Consult with Ms. Spencer (so that she can assist with cutting paper etc)…..and BEGIN!
