Bosnian Genocide 1991

Background ●Bosnia is one of several small countries that emerged from the breakup of Yugoslavia, a multicultural country created after World War I by the victorious Western Allies. ●In April 1992, the U.S and European Community chose to recognize the independence of Bosnia, a mostly muslim country where the serb minority made up 32 percent of the population. ●Throughout 1993, confident that the U.N, United States and the European community would not take military action, Serbs in Bosnia freely committed genocide against Muslims.

Goal Of Bosnian Genocide ●Conflict between Serbs, Croats and Muslims. ●The genocide was committed by the Serbs against the Muslims in Bosnia. ●Goal was for the Serbs to have control over Bosnia and kick out the Croats and Muslims.

Outcome ●Peace Accord was declared. ●Bosnia was partitioned into two main portions known as Bosnian Serb Republic and the Muslim-Croat federation. ●Agreement also called for democratic elections and stipulated war criminals would be handed over for prosecution. ●200,000 muslim civilians had been systematically murdered. ●20,000 were missing and feared dead. ●2,000,000 had become refuges.

Foreign Outcome ●President George Bush of the U.S. did not get involved using military force but recognized the independence of of Slovenia and Croatia. ●The united nations enforced an arms embargo on the former Yugoslavia. However the serbs had a more powerful military force. ●U.S and european communities chose to recognize independence of Bosnia ●Actions of Serbs was recognized as ethnic cleansing ●After a Bosnian Market place was bombed leaving 68 dead and 200 wounded, Military intervention was put in action. ●Nato Bombing strike targeted serb artillery positions.
