Greenhouse Gases  Greenhouse Gases- Gases in the atmosphere that trap heat and reflect it back to Earth  Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Water Vapor, Nitrogen Oxide  Some Greenhouse gases occur naturally  Others are created solely through human activity  Without greenhouse gases, our planet would not be able to retain heat and would freeze

Fossil Fuels  Fuels naturally made during the decomposition of dead organisms  Coal, Natural gas, oil  When burned, fossil fuels emit Carbon Dioxide

What is Global Warming Global warming  Warming of Earth’s surface temperature based on temperature records worldwide. ?  Occurs when greenhouse gases trap heat in Earth’s Atmosphere

 The planet will gradually heat up due to human contribution to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere

Effects of Global Warming on Plants and Animals  Icecaps melt  Sea level rises  More Natural Disasters/Killer Storms

Direct Threats to Humans  Higher risk of disease: - spread through insects  More severe and higher amount of droughts and heat waves  Crop Failure  Damaged Economy Hurricane Damage costs, Disease control costs, Agricultural damage costs

What is the Government Doing to Help?  The government passes laws and regulations to limit the amount of greenhouse gases being released.  Sponsoring research labs that are studying new sources of energy.

The Clean Air Act  The Clean Air Act was amended in 1970 and in 1990 in the US  The act set requirements for what substances and how much of them could be released into the air

What Can We Do to Help?  Carpool  Thermostat control: - 2° down in winter and 2° up in the summer  Cover your pots when cooking  Purchase energy efficient products: - Switching to fluorescent light bulbs will decrease 300 lbs. of carbon waste per year  Urge others to do the same thing!!

Who Should We Call?  The World Resources Institute The WRI provides practical strategies to help protect earth. (202)343-9990 Or Visit: http://www.wri.org/  The US Environmental Protection Agency The EPA enforces regulations and studies environmental issues such as global warming (202)729-7600 Or Visit: http://www.epa.gov/climatechange
