Born on February 2, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Getz was a gifted boy, both in academics and music. His love for music focused his attention to the Saxophone. Getz learned to play the instrument quickly at the young age of thirteen.

Getz joined Jack Teagarden’s band at the age of sixteen. Jack Teagarden’s band played along with renowned musicians such as Nat King Cole and Lionel Hampton.

Word that means “Out of Tune” or “Off-Key” in Portuguese. This song was originally composed by Antonio Carlos Jobim. The version by Stan Getz and Charlie Byrd gained recognition in 1963 winning a Grammy for best jazz performance.

This famous song was inspired by this beautiful, young woman in the city of Ipanema, Rio de Janerio, Brazil. The original composers watched the girl pass by the bar every day, which inspired the writing of the song.

Stan Getz married Beverly Byrne in 1946, Beverly was a vocalist with Gene Krupa’s band. Together they had three children. Stan and Beverly battled drug and alcohol addictions throughout their life and were both later arrested for an attempted robbery. Getz, wanting desperately to escape his drug addictions, moved to Denmark and married Monica Silfverskiold, fathering two more children. Beverly Byrne
