What Is a Real Hypothesis? A hypothesis is a tentative statement that proposes a possible explanation to some phenomenon or event. A useful hypothesis is a testable statement which may include a prediction.

Formalized Hypotheses example: If ultraviolet light affects skin cancer, then people with a high exposure to uv light will have a higher frequency of skin cancer. Because you can get skin cancer from destroyed skin cells and too much radiation. This is why you have a time limit in a sun tan bed.

If… Affected by … Then… DV IV Prediction DV is the expected outcome IV is what is changed altered or manipulated to be tested. Prediction is what you believe will happen based on your background knowledge. BECAUSE… Is your reasoning.

Formalized Hypotheses example: If ultraviolet light affects skin cancer, then people with a high exposure to uv light will have a higher frequency of skin cancer. Improve your hypothesis by giving information about what is to be measured and how.

If ultraviolet light affects skin cancer, then people with a high exposure to uv light will have a higher frequency of skin cancer. If ultraviolet light affects skin cancer, then people exposed to 30 minutes of direct uv light a day will have a higher frequency of skin cancer in 1 year then those who have 5 minutes of daily exposure.

What is to be measured and how? Is it Testable?

Chocolate may cause pimples. If chocolate affects pimples then people who eat 123 grams of chocolate a day will have more pimples than some who consumes 123 grams of chocolate in a week. Because chocolate contains sugar a contributor to acne.

Chocolate may cause pimples. If chocolate affects pimples then people who eats 123 grams of chocolate a day will have more pimples than some who consumes 123 grams of chocolate in a 2 week time period. Because chocolate contains sugar a contributor to acne. Materials : Camera 2 bags of Hershey Kisses 8 volunteers Directions: 0. All volunteers will have a series of facial photographs taken one day prior to the experiment and on the first and last Saturday. All new acne will be counted in both sets of data. 1. 4 volunteers (G1) will consume 123 grams of chocolate or 27 Hershey kisses everyday for 14 days. 4 volunteers (G2) will consume 123 grams of chocolate or 27 Hershey kisses 2 times in a 14 day time period. 2. G1 will start on a Sunday and complete a two week cycle. G2 will also start on the same Sunday, but only consume on both Sundays.
