Literary elements (in your notes) I.Characterization – the revelation of a characters’ personalities. a.Direct characterization – The writer tells the reader what the character is like b. Indirect characterization – The characters’ traits are revealed through their thoughts, actions, and words, and by what other characters say to or about them.

Practice With a partner write down a direct & indirect characterization of yourself. Five minutes and we’ll discuss….

For example: Detail from the story: Dexter stood perfectly still….if he moved forward a step his stare would be in her (Judy’s) line of vision – if he moved backward he would lose his full view of her face. Your own experience: If you have ever wanted to hide your interest in someone, but you could not stop looking, what can you conclude? Conclusion: Dexter is enthralled by Judy.
