3 Inadequate Housing Background In order to house large numbers of people, tenements were built. Many had no windows, heat or indoor plumbing. Often 10 people shared a single room Importance Typhoid and cholera raged through the tenements. Tuberculosis killed thousands each year, including many babies. Large threat of fire.

4 Rising Crime Background Crime flourished Thieves and pickpockets haunted lonely alleys Importance People were not safe

5 Poor Sanitation Background Garbage flowed everywhere. Water was polluted People lacked the education about sanitation Importance People became infected with Cholera due to the waterCholera City streets overflowed with garbage

6 Lack of Education Background Many children had to work. Many schools went to only 6 th grade Many adult immigrants did not know English Importance Children only knew basic skills Immigrant fell back in skills

7 Threat of Fire Background No building codes Fire departments lacked men and proper equipment Importance Buildings were close together and fires spread quickly

8 Pollution from Factories Background Factories polluted air and water No Laws regulating Importance People were sick Dirty air and water
