Inadequate Housing Background In order to house large numbers of people, tenements were built. Many had no windows, heat or indoor plumbing. Often 10 people shared a single room Importance Typhoid and cholera raged through the tenements. Tuberculosis killed thousands each year, including many babies. Large threat of fire.

Rising Crime Background Crime flourished Thieves and pickpockets haunted lonely alleys Importance People were not safe

Poor Sanitation Background Garbage flowed everywhere. Water was polluted People lacked the education about sanitation Importance People became infected with Cholera due to the waterCholera City streets overflowed with garbage

Lack of Education Background Many children had to work. Many schools went to only 6 th grade Many adult immigrants did not know English Importance Children only knew basic skills Immigrant fell back in skills

Threat of Fire Background No building codes Fire departments lacked men and proper equipment Importance Buildings were close together and fires spread quickly

Pollution from Factories Background Factories polluted air and water No Laws regulating Importance People were sick Dirty air and water
