Essential Short Story Notes Creative Writing
2
What this presentation covers: Parameters of a short story. (This class is largely focused on writing short stories) Basic plot terminology (you have to know this stuff to be a writer) The 4 “theories” of good story writing (all good writers follow these theories).
3
What makes a short story? Short stories are usually 15,000 words or less. Usually only have 2-3 characters of importance Setting is simple- one location, one short time- frame. Plot is uncomplicated- 2 or 3 incidents which lead quickly to the climax and resolution. Easy to read- shouldn’t take longer than 1-2 hours to read.
4
Elements of Plot: What is a “Plot”?A plot is the structured sequence of actions and events that make up a story.
5
Elements of Plot: Exposition Rising Action The beginning of the story, when the characters and setting are introduced. The major “events” of the story, where a character(s) attempt to solve a problem.
6
Elements of Plot: Climax Denouement (day-noo-MAH) The most exciting moment in the story. A turning point. Literally means “unknotting”. All questions are answered, conflict comes to a close.
7
Elements of Plot: Resolution The end of a story, when life returns to normal.
8
The Theories of Good Story Writing Good writers “write about what they know”. -Pick characters similar to people you have actually encountered and know. -Pick settings you are familiar with/are well researched on. - Deal with conflicts you personally understand. Oh- you mean you aren’t a Buddhist monk-turned-assassin sent to kill the dictator of China? THEN WHY ARE YOU WRITING ABOUT ONE?
9
The Theories of Good Story Writing A good short story has one clear conflict only. -Man vs Man (external) -Man vs. Self (internal) -Man vs. Society (internal and external) -Man vs. Nature (external)
10
The Theories of Good Story Writing Good writers have a detailed (yet uncomplicated) setting. -A good setting isn’t just concerned about time and place. Authors must also consider the social, psychological, and spiritual implications of their settings. -There are very few “good” short stories where the setting constantly changes.
11
The Theories of Good Story Writing Good short stories begin “in medias res”. -This literally means “in the middle of affairs” -The idea is to start at the point of the story where things are already interesting or are becoming complicated. -It is your job to have your stories start as close to the climax as logically possible.
