5 WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH, HEALTH RESEARCH CENTER PROCESS – KNOWLEDGE BROKER Worked with AARP of WV in 2012-13, following 2012 WV HB 2316 that did not make it out of the Roads and Transportation committee Select Committee on Infrastructure discussed Complete Streets during October, 2012 Legislative Interims –What AARP WV did during Interims: State- and national AARP representatives presented a description of what Complete Streets are (I added information about the potential public health benefits of Complete Streets through the promotion of physical activity and the reduction in PCMVCs) Hosted a complete streets workshop for key legislative, transportation, planning, and public health professionals, including presentations from national Complete Streets experts, national AARP policy experts, and state experts. SB 158 ("Creating Complete Streets Act") introduced on February 14, 2013, co-sponsored by chairs of: –Transportation and Infrastructure Committee –Health and Human Resources Committee –What AARP WV did during legislative session: Held a press conference to present its legislative agenda Led individual meetings with legislators (I added a dash of data) Met with the Commissioner of the WV Department of Transportation on specific bill language Conducted meetings with Senate leadership team and all the members of the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Worked with House Leadership to assign the bill to a receptive committee based on the feedback about 2012 efforts Hosted the Chair of the committee on Government organization, his staff, members of this committee, a representative from the Governor's Office, the Cabinet Secretary for Transportation and key allies for an information/presentation dinner prior to the vote. (I ate)
