Earthquakes Standard 3d. Students know why and how earthquakes occur and the scales used to measure their intensity and magnitude.
2
Earthquakes
3
What causes Earthquakes? Most earthquakes are caused by lithosphere plates moving against each other. There are 3 types of earthquake faults earthquake faults
4
Vocabulary Magnitude – is the measure of the amplitude of an earthquakes wave.
5
How Earthquakes are measured Richter Scale Measures the amplitude of an earthquake’s wave. amplitude Magnitude depends on amount of energy that is stored.
6
Magnitude Magnitude scales are logarithmic which means that each increase of one point on the Ricther scale is 10 times increase of wave amplitudewave amplitude One point increase also means an increase of 30% energy.
7
How Earthquakes are measured Modified Mercalli Scale Depends on how strong an earthquake felt. It also is measured by how much damage it did at any given location.
