In what ways did the National Assembly split into divisions after King Louis conceded power? Let’s explore this question…
3
The National Assembly is the New Government of France! (But only for a while) From 1789 until 1791 (for two full years) the National Assembly debated the future of France.
4
They move both Louis & the head-quarters from Versailles back to Paris.
5
After two years they write a constitution which Louis reluctantly approves. The constitution created a Legislative Assembly which created power much like U.S.A.’s Congress & Senate. What kind of Power does the Legislative Assembly have? Control Money (Taxes) Declare War Pass Laws Basically, all major decisions happened in the Legislative Assembly
6
Who was involved in the Legislative Assembly? Anyone previously in the NATIONAL ASSEMBLY was NOT allowed in the Legislative Assembly. All Legislative Assembly members were elected (most ALL of them came from the Bourgeoisie) The Legislative Assembly consisted of 745 members
7
The Election of the Legislative Assembly marked the emergence of “LEFT” & “RIGHT” politics. Who was the RIGHT ? Called the “Feuillant” (föyäN') or Emigres Wanted a “Constitutional Monarchy” 165 representatives Considered Conservative
8
Who was on the Left? The “Jacobins” (or sans-culottes) Wanted Radical changes in France; Elimination of any power of the King! 330 members (Major Majority) Radical “Leftists”
9
Quickly write your first thoughts down… In American Politics what comes to when you hear “LEFT”? Democrat Liberal Hillary Obama Blue States Donkey
10
And when your hear “RIGHT”? Republicans Conservative G.H.W. Bush Giuliani Red States Elephant
11
