3 Team BRIC-21: Global transcriptome profiling to identify cellular stress mechanisms responsible for spaceflight-induced antibiotic resistance Dr. Wayne Nicholson (PI), University of Florida Dr. Patricia Fajardo-Cavazos (Co-PI), University of Florida Specimens: Bacillus subtilis spores and Staphlyococcus epidermidis cells (Tox 0; BSL 1) Growth Medium: Trypticase Soy Yeast (TSY) + 10% Glycerol Solution (Tox 0; BSL 1) Purpose: To understand how organisms that are normally harmless in healthy immune system could potentially be harmful to astronauts (with weaken immune system); Identify the different stress responses that happen in microgravity, leading to alternations in antibiotic susceptibility Determine the difference in growth rates Determine resistance levels to antibiotics and rates of natural changes in the cell that cause it to be unaffected by antibiotics Science Experiment
