3 What is Dual Enrollment? Dual enrollment is taking college courses while in high school and receiving credit at both the college and high school. Where can I take classes? Miami Dade College OR Florida International University When can I take classes? Any college semester after school, or in the summer. * You can start as early as the summer after your freshman year (rising Sophomores).

4 What are the benefits? Increase student's College Readiness Allow students to begin their College Degree earlier Increase student's Grade Point Average Save money towards a College Degree

5 Minimum Requirements How do I know if I am eligible? – You must have and maintain an un-weighted GPA of at least a 3.0. – For classes at Miami Dade College, you must pass the P.E.R.T. exam. – For elective classes at FIU, you do not need to pass any additional exams. You only need the 3.0 unweighted GPA. – You must be a rising Sophomore or higher. – We will NOT APPROVE any ENGLISH course or CORE SOCIAL STUDIES course (i.e. American History, Government, Economics).

11 How to Search for DE Courses at MDC (continued) Look at dates and times that would be convenient to you: MWF are classes held Monday, Wednesday, & Friday & TR are classes held Tuesday & Wednesday 3 Summer Semesters Summer A (TBA) Summer B (TBA) Summer C (TBA) *** Your counselor will only approve for Summer B courses.

12 How to Fill out DE Form for MDC Check off Summer, write in 2016 for year, and choose campus where class is Fill out your information COMPLETELY. No form will be approved if not filled out correctly or not signed by a parent Insert the course information here.

13 MDC will not accept ANY forms with mistakes, words crossed out, white-out, or a form that is crumpled or dirty. If you are choosing a MATH course at MDC, you must take the PERT and meet the class’ minimum eligibility requirements; Otherwise, you will not be approved for the course or placed in a lower level. 20 In-House Procedures for Submitting Dual Enrollment Forms

21 Instructions 1.Print Dual Enrollment Form from MDC or FIU. 2.Complete forms with ONLY Summer B courses: MUST include Course Number and Reference Number with three alternates. ** DO NOT SELECT an ENGLISH or SOCIAL STUDIES CORE course (No American History, American Government or Economics courses). 3.If the form requires a parent signature, make sure that parent signs.

22 4.Students will drop of COMPLETED forms in the office to be placed in Mrs. Alvarado's mailbox. 5.Mrs. Alvarado will review forms and return to students by the end of that week. 6.If the form is DENIED, then review specific counselor's notes. 7.If the form is APPROVED, then proceed to the selected institution to register. 23 8.After you register with the institution, then bring your Dual Enrollment printed schedule to Mrs. Alvarado and then repeat step #4. 9.Mrs. Alvarado will schedule to meet with you to complete the book voucher. 10.Take completed book voucher to the bookstore and the book will be provided to you. 11.Book will need to be returned at the end of the semester to avoid a financial hold. 24 IMPORTANT! Any class that you take as a Dual Enrollment course will automatically count towards your COLLEGE GPA. If you receive a C in a Dual Enrollment course, you will no longer be eligible to take any other Dual Enrollment courses for the remainder of your high school career. There is no way of omitting a grade or class after you have completed the course at any of the institutions.

25 Deadlines Miami Dade College Registration Opens – March 14 Classes Begin: June 20 Classes End: July 29 Florida International University Accepting Forms – March 22 Last day to submit forms – April 21 Registration Opens – May 12 & June 23 Last Day to Register – May 15 & June 26 Classes Begin: June 27 Classes End: August 5
