2 World History is a survey course of the major turning points in the shaping of the modern world!

3 World History is based on Four Major Themes:

4 Revolution “ Behead the King, let democracy Ring!”

5 Economic Development “Traditional to Modern, hands to machines, how do we make money To buy things?”

6 Nationalism “My country is better than your country!”

7 Conflict “From trenches to the A-bomb Why can’t we all just get along?”

8 Using the Four Themes we will study……

9 Western Europe in the Modern World

10 Modern Africa

11 Modern Middle East

12 Modern Latin America

13 Modern Asia

14 Notebook and Required Materials Textbook stays home! Bring notebook every day…..earn points every unit! Interactive spiral notebook with at least 70 pages- Have it by MONDAY! Pen, pencil + any other additional needed materials (see handout)

15 Grading Guidelines Effort and participation Class/home work Tests and quizzes Current events Interactive notebook Short and formal papers Semester exam

17 World Mapping Activity 1. Determine who is the OLDEST in the group 2. 1 minute to share – rotate clockwise 3. Oldest starts map – 2 minutes!! 4. Rotate to next group member to ADD to map

18 Hand-drawn Map Assignment Due Block Day, August 12 or 13 Draw and label the following: 7 continents 4 oceans 4 hemispheres Prime meridian and equator Extra Credit: major mountain ranges, rivers and lakes

20 If you are absent from class: Step One: check posted assignment calendar and file folder for missing assignments (see back table OR Mrs. Pfeifer’s website) Step Two: per school policy you have TWO days for every day of absence to make up work Step Three: tests and quizzes will be made up by appointment

21 Can I Turn in My Assignments Late?? LATE WORK OPTION: Incomplete assignments can be made up for half credit during the CURRENT UNIT OF STUDY. Once the Unit Test is complete the window of opportunity to make up incomplete work from that unit CLOSES.

22 Student Behavior Be Prompt – I keep track of tardies Be Prepared – you don’t have to lug around that textbook….but bring your notebook and homework Be Respectful – of your classroom, your teacher, and your classmates. Everyone’s opinion matters. Learn how to respectfully disagree with others. Rude, disrespectful, and intolerant language and behavior will not be tolerated. Be Productive – I realize you have other things going on in your lives…but your job is to focus on the work of this class during class time!

23 What happens if you don’t follow classroom rules???? First Step: verbal and/or nonverbal warning Second Step: student/teacher conference Third step: red detention notification slip (in-class detention of 25 minutes – may include parent phone call) Final Step: referral and parent conference
