Leaving for America Reasons for leaving: Wealth Religious freedom They settled on Atlantic Coast The places the settled and the different geography contributed to social, economic and political diversity in America.

The 3 Regions There are three colonial regions New England (NE)- shipbuilding Middle- religious tolerance Southern- Plantations

Types of Colony Owenership Royal Governed directly by the king Proprietary King granted ownership to an individual who tries to make money off of it (Lord Baltimore). Charter King granted the right to govern themselvs

The First Colony Jamestown-1607 Founded by a joint-stock company called Virginia Company The group wanted to get rich by selling products, and raw materials The colonists had to overcome bitter winters, disease, and starvation with the help of Native Americans

Religion Anglican Church- Official church of England Refusing to follow the church was treason People who disagreed with Anglican church came to America

Puritans Were not Anglican Came over to establish a pure church based on the bible Sailed over on the Mayflower Established Plymouth, Massachusetts in 1620. Quakers founded Pennsylvania under William Penn’s leadership Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore for Catholics

Georgia Established as a prison for people who could not afford their debts Served as a buffer between Florida (Spain) and South Carolina (America)

Southern Economy Virginia’s cash crop Tobacco NC Became known as “Tar Heels” because the colony produced tar, pitch, and turpentine from pine trees. Southern plantations raised crops using……? indentured servants and slaves Slaves came over in the middle leg of triangular trade

Middle Economy Farmers growing crops People also relying on commerce especially in big cities NYC These colonies had ports for shipping products overseas

Bacon’s Rebellion Wealthy landowners had most power in government Bacon was attacked by Indians several times He demanded the government help him out, and represent everyone, not just rich

Salutary Neglect Colonies were allowed to govern themselves Colonial legislatures had most of the power in the government

Salem Witch Trials Some people in Salem Mass, a puritan colony were accused of being witches. They were given a trial If found guilt they were executed
