The San Francisco earthquake measured 7.8 on the Richter Scale and destroyed 28,000 buildings. 3,000 people died from the earthquake and the 52 separate fires that destroyed the city.

The Gujarat earthquake measured 7.9 on the Richter Scale and killed more than 30,000 people and injured another 55,000 around the city of Bhuj. 500,000 were made homeless. Over 1 million buildings were destroyed. The Indian plate moves into the Eurasian plate at a rate of 6cm a year. This causes the Himalayas to rise by 5mm a year.
