3 NATIONAL WOMEN SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT: NWSM  After Civil War (mid 1860s)  Campaigning for a constitutional amendment to give women the right to vote  Key Players: Elizabeth Cady Stanton & Susan B. Anthony

4 LATE 1800’ S  4 states in the west give women the right to vote  Wyoming, Utah, Colorado & Idaho  Women’s contributions in building the frontier are starting to become recognized

5 NEW GENERATION  Elizabeth Cady Stanton & S.B.Anthony die  New wave fights for suffrage state by state  Now Western & Midwestern states allow women to vote in state elections  Key player: Carrie Chapman Catt

6 RADICAL NWSM  Avtivists for women’s suffrage meet with Woodrow Wilson, who is neutral about the concept…he does not back a constitutional amendment  Women are fed up & protest outside the White House & are arrested  Key Player: Alice Paul

7 FINALLY WILSON AGREES  President Wilson agreed to support the suffrage movement  1919: congress passes the 19 th amendment (women & minorities can vote)  By 1920, 75% of states ratify amendment
