22 Nov'08Slide 1 Concadd Need for it and Our role Conventional setup Engineer's Language Drawing and Information Creating a Database The End user Getting Information

22 Nov'08Slide 1 Conventional setup Concadd We have entered the age of Information &Technology and we are flooded with information through various medium. Still our industries have not adopted IT entirely but for some specific areas like PDM, ERP and so on. We can see that Drawings (Ammonia prints and Plottings) are still being used in industrial shop floors and nothing has and can replace them. No software has forgotten the conventional ways as far as draughting-detailing is concerned. We have just automated this process by increasing the processing speed by ten folds. Everything is taken care of by software intelligence. It is error free and flexible unlike your conventional Design Department. We will discuss more in the coming slides.

22 Nov'08Slide 1 Engineer's Language Concadd Drawing is an Engineer's language, anything he wants to convey is sketched out as a rough concept and later he adds the orthographic views, sectional views and magnified views to explain his concept. CAD software has changed this scenario drastically in the past few decades. A rendered 3D view of a model which can be rotated dynamically and which shows the internal details can go far beyond any sketch or 2D drawing in explaining things. In many industries this has happened, the conventional 2d drawings are being replaced with 3d models viewed in high end workstations. The 2D drawings are limited to just documentation. Complex shapes having 3 dimensional contours can now be created easily and the need for any physical prototypes of the component has been omitted. Every step performed in the component creation is recorded in the software and have a high degree of flexibility for modification. We even have dedicated tools to perform stack up analysis, realistic rendering, configuration creations, catalog parts etc...But you might be wondering that "how will i view a component without a cad software to open it?" This problem has been solved in recent years with the advent of "viewing softwares". We have dedicated viewers which can open iges or step formats of the file, but these softwares have limited performance if we want technical details of the component.

22 Nov'08Slide 1 Drawing and Information Concadd Drawing is used to convey information about the component involved like geometrical data, manufacturing details, material used, dimensions, surface finish, geometrical tolerance, Bill of materials (in case of assembly), designed by, Quality check performed by, Component name, drawing number, Angle of projection and many more things. As mentioned before, we have softwares which can create all the above functionalities with a few button clicks. The 3D virtual model is used to create the various orthographic views and section views. The dimensions used to create the 3D model are automatically transferred to the 2D view in the drawing. We also can have a bidirectional associativity that is any modification of the dimension in the drawing will reflect in the 3D model and vice versa. All other data can be entered in automated fields and they will reappear in the required areas in the Title block or Revision block. Associativity is maintained between the drawing and the model file.

22 Nov'08Slide 1 Creating a Database Concadd When you have large number of components, they are to be well organised for further use in an assembly or for future modifications and variants. We have softwares which are Database Base managers and can give full details like the associated 3D model file; it's use in a large assembly; it's different modified versions; it's variants, date & time of creation; person who created it; technical details (mass, volume) for cost estimation and so on. Such a kind of huge database saves a lot of time and cost to company as it prevents repetetion of files, helps in future target predictions, can be integrated with ERP systems, gives extensive details about subassembly and assemblies.

22 Nov'08Slide 1 The End user Concadd The drawing is used by people in the manufacturing shop floor; by engineers doing stress analysis; by vendors & suppliers; by Data base managing systems; by the Design Engineers. Imagine the daunting task if each of the above departments functions in a sequence and decision making process. Now we have what is called concurrent engineering, all the departments are well networked and access the single database for collecting and processing the information which simplifies many problems in the conventional system. Levels of user permission are set in the database for any misuse of data; any modification to any file is maintained by the system and the modification details highlights when anybody opens the file; any changes in the top level is transferred to all associative files; everybody can access the files at the same time so no duplication is permitted and the advantages go on.

22 Nov'08Slide 1 Getting Information Concadd Information is what it is all about. Component has problems with assembly, you need information about the component; the vendor wants to clear his doubts, you need info of the component; the QC guy wants info about the faulty component; the component fails frequenty, the analysis guy wants info about the component; and the requirement goes on. Our solutions can get you all the info about a component within a short time and thus reducing the manufacturing downtime. Softwares have gone beyond when it comes to PDM, they have gone across the world through internet.
