3  Greater emphasis on grammar, spelling and punctuation  Less emphasis on writing poetry, more emphasis on performance  Specific benchmarks rather than the teaching of specific genres  Higher standards of attainment expected in reading

4  Text based approach to English (exciting stories used as a stimulus for other activities)  Grammar, punctuation and spelling embedded in the daily English lesson.  Writing linked to the daily English lesson (application of developing skills)  Renewing stocks of high-quality literature in classrooms  Reviewing homework across the school  Authors in school (Book Week)

5  Read with your child every day and sign the reading record (if appropriate)  Read to your child  Sign the reading record  Return books to school  Praise your child’s efforts!  Take your children to the public library  Allow children the freedom of choice  Ensure homework is completed promptly.
