2 Early Life born 1882-1945 Theodore Roosevelt was his 5th cousin taught by private tutors graduated from Harvard; law school at Columbia University while in Harvard, he met Eleanor Roosevelt U.S. Senator of New York in 1921, he became ill with polio, a disease that attacks and cripples the body; his legs were paralyzed

3 Chief Legislator A Roosevelt got congress to do many things, and they supported him more than other presidents America remained isolated o Good Neighbor Policy

4 Chief Diplomat A Good Neighbor Policy o good relation with Latin America o positive influence Yalta Conference o consisted of FDR, Stalin, and Churchill o created an agenda for when the war in Germany was over Atlantic Charter o an agreement between FDR and Churchill o a blueprint/agenda for post-World War II o later became the foundation for most treaties/agreements that shape the world today

5 Guardian of the Economy Great Depression o Fireside Chats  during this time, people were depressed, bored, anxious and worried  gave speeches on the radio to calm people and explain how hes going to fix the economic problems that were going on o The New Deal  relief for the unemployed, recovery of the economy,and reform of the financial system so another depression does not happen

6 Guardian of the Economy Cont. A Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) o provided jobs for single men that were 18-25 years old o building parks, bridges, planting trees o earned about $1 a day Agricultural Adjustment Administration (AAA) o paid farmers to destroy their crops to prevent overproduction

7 Commander-in-Chief A Selective Service and Training Act o required all men 26-35 to register for the military draft  train American men for the military service in case the U.S. would have to defend itself from Europe and Japan o in 1940 Germany began to attack England  Roosevelt helped out by selling them more military equipment and humanitarian aid

8 Head of State B First Inaugural Address o "the only thing we have to fear is fear itself" The first president to effectively use the radio to communicate with citizens at home; motivate them in the time of despair

9 Chief of Party B was a Democrat; uncle Theodore Roosevelt was Republican chosen by the Democratic party to run against Republican Herbert Hoover promised a "New Deal" to fix the stock market crash during his campaign, he rented a touring car and went around the state with Richard Connell, who was an inspired speaker and Democrat Roosevelt's first victory was more of luck than hard work

10 Chief Executive A complete Woodrow Wilson's goal for a world to establish a world where American ideas of freedom and democracy prevailed wanted a world of peace and order wanted to maintain peace with the UN, but failed Social Security, Food and Drug Administration due to his many years in office, his leadership was very strong o "imperial presidency"

11 Final Grade A Brought America out of the Great Depression No more isolationism Strong leader; experienced in office "imperial presidency"

12 Questions What might have happened to England if America remained isolated and had not provided aid? How would Roosevelt's views be different if he was a Republican like his uncle Theodore Roosevelt?
