Hello Everybody! So I like to start every seminar by asking you to share something good that happened this week!

One Step Back-Two Steps Forward What was the purpose of Unit Four? How about Unit Two? And, how about Unit One? Okay, so what was the purpose of Unit Five? What was the purpose of Unit Three?

Writing is a major form of communication! What are some of the reasons or purposes we have for writing? Remember to consider the audience For whom you are writing. When you submit to your prof he/she is your unique audience.

To reach your audience… What is your most appropriate form of writing to reach your audience? What are the forms we may consider?

The Writing Process Pre-write Draft Revise Edit What do we mean by each of the above terms? Should we put publish at the end? Publish!

Where do we start? Start Early Carefully read directions Pick your topic Determine your audience your purpose and your form Research and evaluate your resources

Organize your writing! What are the steps in your reading that guide you to being an organized writer?

Is this what you do? Take Careful Notes Organize your information Complete a rough draft Proofread Review for plagiarism Check-off instructions completed Ask for help early

Other Writing Considerations Use the proper paragraph format (next slide) Use an occasional quote Use sentence variety Avoid repeating unnecessary words If your paper isn’t long enough go back to the drawing board. Use text citations on stats, numbers, quotes, summaries, paraphrases Read comments from your instructor to enhance your learning once your grade is delivered. Use technology tools like spell check, grammar check, thesaurus. Proofread

Supporting sentences (and details) Gives more information/details about the topic sentence One of those benefits is that students can study and learn at their own pace. (detail sentence) Courses are available 24 hours a day seven days a week. Another benefit would be that there is no travel time or gasoline cost involved in getting to class. 3. Concluding Sentence Summarizes the paragraphThese two benefits make online learning a great option.

Seriously We all should understand the value Of being a strong writer. Read When you see it, you will be able to use it. Enhance your writing… It’s something we all should choose to do!

Case study - Carmen Six years ago, Carmen graduated from high school and found a job as a receptionist at an accounting office. She has become a valuable asset to the small company, helping with accounting issues in addition to greeting customers, but her salary has remained too low to meet today’s living costs. Most of her coworkers either have a college degree or are working on one, so she has decided that in order to advance, she should also go back to school. But Carmen in concerned about her writing abilities for college work. In high school she did most of her writing last minute, and since then has only written short memos and sent e-mail. She knows there will be writing in her classes and is concerned.

Look ahead: Unit 7 Unit 7 Goals and Planning Understand the importance of goal-setting and planning Set goals for completing the interview, Unit 9 assignment and WAC (Writing Across the Curriculum). Important Points: Pull down your interview questions from Unit 7 Assignment. Choose your candidate; set up your appointment! Practice. Turn in your interview by the last day of Unit 8. Be aware; look into Units 8, 9 and 10. You have a writing project in Unit 10 that is mandatory and due by Sunday after the beginning of Unit 10.
