Space & Distribution AIM: How can we classify the distribution of a feature over space?
2
DISTRIBUTION The arrangement of a feature in space is called distribution 3 Main properties Density Concentration Pattern
3
Density: the frequency in which something occurs in space Arithmetic density : total # of objects in an area (feature/area) EX: population density of a country-> Belgium has an arithmetic density of 900 persons per square mile IT’S DENSITY, not overall population China’s density is 360 persons per square mile even though their population is 1.3 billion
4
Density Physiological Density: the # of people per unit of arable land (land suitable for agri.) Q: would a high physiological density be a good or bad indicator? A: Bad. A high physiological density would indicate that a country has problems growing enough food to sustain it’s pop.
5
Density Agriculture density: the number of farmers per unit of farmland Q: Would a high agriculture density be a good or bad indicator? A: It may suggest that a country does not has inefficient agriculture (damaged soil; poor land distribution laws)
6
CONCENTRATION The extent of a feature’s spread over space Clustered: objects close together Dispersed: relatively far apart Generally used to compare distribution changes over time
7
Draw 2 Boxes of Equal Size In the two boxes you should represent the same level of density. One box, however, should show a clustered concentration, while the other shows a dispersed concentration.
8
PATTERN The geometric arrangement of objects in space Can be irregular/organized in a geometric pattern Ex: many distributions are linear like houses on a street
10
Gender and Ethnic Diversity in Space Your gender, race, ethnicity, sex, and orientation all play an interest in determining your spatial patterns How does your gender determine where you go? How does your race determine where you live?

Saudi women need to be accompanied by a male guardian known as a 'mahram' whenever they leave the house. The guardian is often a male relative and will accompany women on all of their errands, including shopping trips and visits to the doctor. Such practices are rooted in "conservative traditions and religious views that hold giving freedom of movement to women would make them vulnerable to sins," according to The Guardian.

More than 100 anxious parents gathered in the auditorium at PS 8 in Brooklyn Heights last night to discuss the proposed rezoning of two public elementary schools serving swaths of Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Vinegar Hill and Fort Greene that are currently divided along racial and socioeconomic lines. The rezoning would require predominantly white, upper-middle- class, bursting-at-the-seams PS 8 to move DUMBO and Vinegar Hill families to PS 307— a school that is currently under capacity, and predominantly serves African-American residents of the NYCHA- run Farragut Houses.bursting-at-the-seamsFarragut Houses Black and Hispanic students currently represent 34% of PS 8's student body, while PS 307 is 95% minority. Under the proposed rezoning these percentages are expected to shift to 25-35% and 55-65% respectively.
