We built 10 MOOCs in 6 months, and learned a few things along the way
We built 10 MOOCs in 6 months, and learned a few things along the way. Let’s apply those principles to new hire onboarding. Sales Talent IT Engineering Etc. Think of a type of new hire joining your organization…… Pre-hire Day 1 Week 1 Week 2 What do they need Week 2 and beyond to be productive and acculturated? How we do things here How we organize to get things done What we believe in Our policies Your benefits Jot down three different ideas for a new hire MOOC LISA

Principle 1: Context is king
Now take 1 of your ideas and ask yourself….. How does this idea “show up on the job”? What are the skills or behaviors involved? How we do things here Break it down into skills and behaviors Written Comms Data Analysis Meeting Facilitation Define deliverables or actions that can be demonstrated 1. Provide a status update State a point of view 3. Summarize best practices LISA Story of the slide: we want to teach new hires about written communication in this environment. During their work here, written comms will have to do things like provide status updates, state their POVs, etc. What’s an assignment they will likely be asked to do as new hires anyway that embodies these long term tasks? (create the 90 day plan). We’re going to ask them to do a real world thing (90 day plan) in order to learn how to we comm in writing in this environment. What will they need to help them? Resources tailored to building great decks in this environment, but also some help with the real world ask, the 90 day plan Assignment: Create your 90-day plan in PowerPoint Supporting Content: 90-day plan structures Company ppt templates Best-in-class examples Tutorial on expec-tations of what goes in decks Taking a deck from good to great Communicating with visuals Choose a real-life deliverable they actually need on the job

Principle 2: One-size-does not fit all
Now ask yourself….. How can I craft a non-linear experience to support different needs and experience levels? Emotional, Attention Grabbing Hook: what happens when it all goes wrong? Appealing to emotion creates curiosity and an additional reason to engage Assignment: create a 90-day plan in PowerPoint How we do things here Determine which components are a baseline for all Written Comms Break supporting content into recommended and optional Content (recommended) Company ppt templates Tutorial on expectations of what goes in decks Content (Optional) 90-day plan structures Best-in-class examples Taking a deck from good to great Communicating with visuals Participants choose based on need MARY Point-about Hook: Our usage shows us that the hook asset gets the most views, so it’s role it making the case of the content is really critical. Point about Recommended and Optional content: Volume of assets and structure really matter. There is a tendency to be ATTAP, then you end up with 100 assets and overwhelm novices, and cause experts to tune out. Necessary to keep focusing back on what you are trying to accomplish. In this example it is to get people to create good communications in this environment. Point about Data Analysis and Meeting Facilitation: we would follow a similar path for other critical new hire skills

What types of assets could you use? How would you “chunk” them?
Principle 3: Video is not the gold standard…..mix it up Now ask yourself….. What types of assets could you use? How would you “chunk” them? Supporting Content: 90-day plan structures Company ppt templates Best-in-class examples Tutorial on expec-tations of what goes in decks Taking a deck from good to great Communicating with visuals Revisit your list of supporting content Assignment: Create your 90-day plan in PowerPoint Animated whiteboard on 90-structures Link to org’s brand site and visual library Jot down a few ideas for assets you can create, beyond the talking head video Video on expectations with animation Pdf with examples MARY Point about video: The framing is about the default of talking head and our tendency to look for a way to replicate lecture and telling in every platform. It’s easy, that doesn’t mean it works. PPT template with sample structures “Kahn-style” video showing markup of good to great PPTs with best-in-class examples annotated PPT template

What interactive components can be introduced?
Principle 4: Static is….well….boring…and more importantly translates into a lack of engagement Now ask yourself….. What interactive components can be introduced? Assignment: Create your 90-day plan in PowerPoint Peer Review First Draft Jot down a few ideas JIT webinar to address FAQ’s on discussion boards LISA Point about static: Just reading/watching resource content (even great resource content) and working independently on my assignment often isn’t enough to keep me engaged. Many things about a MOOC and self-paced, we can leverage the structure and activities to help keep people engaged. Mentor assigned

What deadlines can you create along the way?
Principle 5: Procrastination is basic human behavior…..create deadlines Now ask yourself…..
