Problem of the day For breakfast, Mr. Schwartz spent 1 sixth of his money on a hot chocolate and 1 sixth of his money on a bagel. What fraction of his money did Mr. Schwartz spend on breakfast?

Concept Development: Problem 1 On your personal white board, draw a number bond decomposing 4 into 4 ones Thumbs up when you’re finished.

Concept Development: Problem 1 Now, work with your partner to show a number bond decomposing 4 into 2 parts. One part should be composed of 3 ones. Thumbs up when you’re finished. 3 3 1 1

Look at our two number bonds: They represent the same whole, but in the second bond we combined 3 ones into a single digit Talk to your partner about the difference between these two number bonds. What fractions would they represent? Talk to your partner about the difference between these two number bonds. What fractions would they represent?

Draw a number bond decomposing 1 into 4 unit fractions Thumbs up when you’re done. Now, work with your partner to show a number bond decomposing 1 into 2 parts. One part should be composed of 3 copies of the unit fraction. Thumbs up when you’re ready!
