2. EARTHQUAKE A violent movement of the rocks in the Earth's crust. Earthquakes are usually quite brief, but may repeat over a long period of time. TSUNAMI Tsunamis are waves caused by sudden movement of the ocean due to earthquakes, landslides on the sea floor, land slumping into the ocean, large volcanic eruptions or meteorite impact in the ocean. - The friction between two slow-moving plates of the Earth's crust creates energy released in the form of an earthquake. -This abruptly pushes up one of the immense plates of the Earth's crust. That suddenly displaces an enormous amount of ocean water.

4. CYCLONE Tornado Twister Cyclone Hurricane Typhoon Tornado and twister are different names for the same type of storm – a violently rotating column of air over land associated with a severe thunderstorm. In Australia we call these large- scale storms tropical cyclones. In the USA they talk of hurricanes and in Asia, typhoons. Cyclones form over warm tropical waters where the sea's surface temperature is above 26° Celsius.

5. BUSHFIRE Bushfires are considered a large-scale fire in forest, scrub, woodland and grassland areas. Cause of bushfire: -Dry and windy weather -Deliberate lighting of fires with the intent to cause damage -Leaving a fire unattended -Failing to put out a match properly -Small flames resulting from glass bottles or mirrors that become a larger fire.

7. LANDSLIDE Landslides take place when dirt, pebbles, rocks and boulders slide down a slope together. Examples of areas in Australia which are known to be landslide prone: -Coastal cliffs -The Great Dividing Range along the east coast -The Strzelecki and Otway Ranges in southern Victoria -South-east Queensland -Alpine Regions

PREPARE & RESPOND In small groups - 1.Choose a Natural Disaster 2.Use your device to research ways in which you could prepare and respond to your chosen disaster 3.Record these in your inquiry book 4. Devise a survival kit with at least 10 items you would pack if you were preparing for a disaster and state why you would pack them.
