2 What is motion? An object is in MOTION when its distance from another object is changing. Whether you are moving or not depends on your point of view.

3 Reference point A reference point is used as a comparison to determine if something is in motion. An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point.

4 Distance & Displacement The basic SI unit of length is the meter. Distance is the total ground covered during motion. Displacement is the change in an object’s position.

5 Speed Speed refers to "how fast an object is moving." Speed is how much distance is covered during a certain amount of time. Speed = Distance divided by Time

Constant Speed is Cruise Control! Traveling at the same distance each second

7 Average Speed = Total Distance divided by Total Time!

Instantaneous Speed Speed at a given instant A Speedometer records your instantaneous speed

9 Velocity When you know the speed AND direction of an object’s motion, that is velocity!

Acceleration is a change in velocity Speeding Up Slowing Down Changing Direction

SPEED Speed = Distance Time s = d/t d s t Measured in metres per second (m/s) also km/hr or mph
