3. 2 What is motion? An object is in MOTION when its distance from another object is changing. Whether you are moving or not depends on your point of view.

4. 3 Reference point A reference point is used as a comparison to determine if something is in motion. An object is in motion if it changes position relative to a reference point.

5. 4 Distance & Displacement The basic SI unit of length is the meter. Distance is the total ground covered during motion. Displacement is the change in an object’s position.

6. 5 Speed Speed refers to "how fast an object is moving." Speed is how much distance is covered during a certain amount of time. Speed = Distance divided by Time

7. Constant Speed is Cruise Control! Traveling at the same distance each second

8. 7 Average Speed = Total Distance divided by Total Time!

9. Instantaneous Speed Speed at a given instant A Speedometer records your instantaneous speed

10. 9 Velocity When you know the speed AND direction of an object’s motion, that is velocity!

11. Acceleration is a change in velocity Speeding Up Slowing Down Changing Direction

12. SPEED Speed = Distance Time s = d/t d s t Measured in metres per second (m/s) also km/hr or mph

13. 12 If a horse can travel 21 meters in 3 seconds, what is his speed? We have distance. We have time. We need speed. Speed = Distance/Time Speed = 21 meters/ 3 seconds Speed = 7 meters/second Speed = 7 m/s

14. 13 Nascar Travels 600 miles in 3 hours. What is the speed?

15. 14 British-made Thrust SSC “Fastest car on Earth” Can travel 380 miles in 0.5 hours. What is its speed?
