Manipulative Care Mostly utilized as a complementary treatment In 2007, over 18 million adults received manipulative care within the past 12 months Also, in 2007, 3.9 billion dollars spent on visits to practitioners for chiropractic or osteopathic manipulation. Manipulative care for conditions involving the musculoskeletal system, nervous system, and other bodily systems Chiropractic Osteopathic Osteopathic medicine’s philosophy All body systems are interrelated and dependent upon one another for good health Chiropractic medicine’s philosophy Attention to the biomechanics, function and structure of the spine, its effects on the musculoskeletal and neurological systems Proper function of these systems means restoring and preserving health

Types of Manipulative Care Chiropractic Primary focus is on the body’s structure and its functioning Spine Receive adjustments or “manipulations” to: Correct alignment issues Alleviate pain Improve function Support body's natural ability to heal itself. Treatment for lower back pain, headaches, and other musculoskeletal pain

Types of Manipulative Care Osteopathic Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) to ease pain promote healing increase overall mobility Move muscles and joints using techniques including stretching, gentle pressure, and resistance Treatment for muscle pain and other health conditions – asthma, carpal tunnel syndrome, sinus disorders, etc.

Drawbacks to Manipulative Care Some discomfort or soreness following adjustments/manipulations Risks (which are rare) Herniated disc Compression of nerves, which causing more pain and/or numbness Certain type of stroke (vertebral artery dissection) due to manipulations of the neck Individuals with certain medical conditions or who take certain prescription medications are not able to utilize manipulative care
