History Germanium was discovered by Clemens Winkler in 1886.
The name germanium comes from the German word “Germania” meaning Germany. It is found in the Earth’s crust and obtained from refining copper, zinc, and lead.

Uses It is used in semiconductors, infrared prisms, reflectors, wide angle lenses, and dentistry. Phosphor in fluorescent lamps. It is used in medicine as an antioxidant.

Interesting Facts Germanium is available in several forms including chips, powders, and grains. Its melting point is 937.4°C. Certain germanium products have low toxicity, but it clearly fights against certain bacteria.
