Simile Simile-using like or as to compare two things. Ex. My cousin was blind as a bat. Ex. I am as cold as ice.

Metaphor Metaphor- comparing 2 things without using like or as; something is something else Ex. The girl had a heart of gold. Ex. The dog was so white it looked like it was rolling in dough.

Hyperbole Hyperbole-using exaggeration to make a point Ex. When I got home I had a ton of homework. Ex. She was so happy her smile was a mile wide.

Onomatopoeia Onomatopoeia –sound word Ex. The car was so fast all you heard was vroom! EX. When he jump in the pool it was a splash!

Alliteration Alliteration- repetition of beginning words Ex. A alligator ate another alligator. Ex. The thief took a telephone.

Personification Personification-giving human qualities to something not human. Ex. The stars winked in the sky. Ex. All the trees were dancing with the wind.

Idiom Idiom-a well known expression that doesn’t not mean what it says Ex. I told my mom to bite her tonge. Ex. That homework was a piece of cake.
